February 2012 e-mailshot

Subject: Cavernoma Alliance UK - February 2012 e-mailshot

Dear %%salutation%%

Welcome to our February e-mailshot bringing you the latest news about Cavernoma Alliance UK.

Let us begin this emailshot by thanking participating members in the Christmas/New Year 2012 Appeal. (It is not too late to contribute, follow in the top right hand corner of our web site.) We raised over £5,000 which is enough to pay for this year’s Conference and this year’s rent. CA UK is also waiting to hear of decisions from a number of grant-issuing bodies about possible funding for 2012. Your generosity is very much appreciated.

International Brain Awareness Week

Saturday 17 March 2012 CA UK are pleased to present a lecture on cavernoma by the leading neurosurgeon Mr Richard Kerr. Mr Kerr is consultant neurosurgeon at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Please attend this event which will begin promptly at 10:00 with Arlene Wilkie, CEO of the Neurological Alliance. Neurological Alliance is a charity that CA UK has belonged to for five years. Ms Wilkie will talk about the work of the Alliance and the progress made towards installing neurological illness within the purview of politicians. This will be followed by morning coffee and Mr Kerr will begin his lecture promptly at 11:00. All members are welcome to attend and the admission is free. These presentations are given in the Old Boardroom, National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London WC1.

One of our Scottish members is organising a regionally based event featuring a talk by a neurosurgeon. Further details are available by contact Godsal at godsal@nva.org.uk

British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing

You may remember that in the June e-mailshot <https://member.cavernoma.org.uk/opus430.html> Alison Garwood, one of our trustees, explained her plans to start reading and reporting back on what was in the BJNN which may be of interest to members. Since then we've posted four round ups to the Members' Area on the web site covering eight issues of the journal and you can find those here <https://member.cavernoma.org.uk/bjnn.html>.

Young Persons’ CaverHub (YPC)

Saturday 14 April 2012 Brana Thorn, the YPC’s coordinator, will facilitate a meeting for young persons and their parents/carers in the Old Boardroom, National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London WC1. The first YPC of 2012 will have presentations by surgeons from Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. As usual, young persons will be entertained in an adjoining room while the parents listen to the specialists.

More information will be sent to interested parties nearer the time.

Membership

CA UK membership currently stands at 447. If you haven't visited the Members' Area for a while you are encouraged to do so, and to read and reply to other members' concerns. This is a great opportunity to recommend the cavernoma-chat mailing list (which has been quite busy of late), the British forum on the Angioma Alliance website accessible from the Members' Area, and the members only Facebook site where members of the Alliance can chat in real time.

International Cavernoma Alliance UK 2012 Forum

The board of trustees are pleased to announce that the Grange Holborn Hotel, 50-60 Southampton Row, London is again the venue for the 2012 Forum. Admission is free to all members and financially challenged members are encouraged to attend (please contact info@cavernoma.org.uk for further details). Our Treasurer, Tim Millward, will be pleased to accept donations from members during the course of the day.

The trustees are delighted that Mr Owen Sparrow from Southampton University Hospital will be the 2012 keynote speaker. Details of other speakers which include an epilepsy specialist and physiotherapist on intracerebral haemorrhage are to be found on the website at <http://www.cavernoma.org.uk/forum2012.html>, along with details of member-led workshops and accommodation. (Please note CA UK has negotiated a special arrangement with the Grange Holborn Hotel for overnight accommodation. Please make your reservations early and certainly no later than 8 April 2012.)
